The season kicked off last night in Christchurch and continues round New Zealand throughout April. Each region has 2 - 4 refrigeration apprentices competing to earn a place in the New Zealand final which will be held at the 2017 IRHACE Conference in Auckland from 11 to 12 May.

The competitors have to undertake 3 practical tests and 1 theory test over a 3 hour timeframe. The regional winners will then compete in the national final, which is a challenging two day tasks.

The national competition last year was won by Jock McVicar from Commercial Industrial Refrigeration. As part of his prize he joined the Realcold team at ARBs in Melbourne in May 2016.

This year Realcold will be donating the main prize - $4,000 Travel Voucher - and contributing a significant amount of man power and tools to ensure the competition's continued success.

Wallie Askew served as President of NZIRACE from 1974 -1982 and was awarded Life Membership for his achievements during this service. The Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Competition was established by IRHACE in 1999 on the tenth anniversary of the tragic deaths of Wallie and his wife Betty in a traffic accident. Wallie was a strong supporter of the HVAC&R industry, the Institute, and apprentice training.
